Imagine if you find the Spring of Eternal Youth and you decide to drink the water, and since you want to impress your friends with your eternally youthful look, you keep the location a secret and you don’t share it with your friends and family.
Flash forward to the future, you look not a day older than on your eighteenth birthday, you’re 130 years old with a mind that’s alert and full of the problems and knowledge accumulated over the years. Your best friends are all dead, your immediate family are long gone, but you look as old as your grandchild. I bet that you probably regret the decision to stay forever young, or at least the decision not to share your discovery with your friends and family then. Even then, some of your best mates might not want to share your important discovery and let nature take its course. I can just imagine if somebody is forever young, his or her friends will probably get sick of the person saying, “When I was young …” or “Things were so different eighty years ago …”. You’d feel really old with all of the wisdom that you’ve stored in your memory, just when others around you have just started their journey of self discovery.
The reason why I suddenly ponder about such things is because things are really quiet at the office – my boss and my workmate who sits next to me are out of the office for an interstate meeting. Three of my workmates left on Friday, as mentioned previously. On top of that, a whole department sitting across my area also moved down to the first floor on Friday. It’s quite depressing to be surrounded by empty desks, accompanied by lonely tick-tacks of your workmate typing by herself in an empty pod. Our department has shrunk from around 25 personnel in the heyday prior to the merger to 16. After this weekend, the number will drop to 15. By the end of the month, it will drop further to 12. Being a survivor can be quite a lonely experience!
So the next time you slap on your magic anti-wrinkle cream and drink your wizzamabang anti-aging potions and juices, share them around and insist that your friends and families do the ritual as well, or let nature take its course and enjoy your life!
