I’m listening to the soundtrack of A Touch of Spice (Politiki Kouzina) soundtrack – I bought the CD many months ago at a CD warehouse sale at the Royal Adelaide Showground. I watched the movie in 2004 when it was played in Adelaide – a Greek movie about a man (can’t remember his name now) who had to return to Istanbul to visit his dying pappous (grandfather). The character grew up in Istanbul and learnt the love of spices from his grandfather … his pappous told him that …
Pepper… is hot and scorches, just like the sun
Salt… is used as needed to spice up one’s life
Cinnamon… is bitter and sweet, just like a woman
The movie deals with the hostility between Greece and Turkey in the old times when Turkish-born Greeks were forced to flee the country to return to Greece.
I don’t know why I chose to play the CD but I thought it would be good to listen to some soundtrack music. I love soundtracks – I love the nuances, the emotions and the symphonic quality of the music. A Touch of Spice soundtrack is composed by Evanthia Reboutsika and the songs are very soothing – sounds like Greek music, but sweetened and tempered down with some melodic arrangement so it doesn’t sound like the music that comes out from Zorba the Greek. 🙂
