Saturno Contro (Saturn in Opposition) is the first movie out of the four Italian movies that I picked from the 2007 Lavazza Italian Film Festival.
The movie was directed by Ferzan Ozpetek, the guy behind Facing Window. It explores the friendship amongst a group of friends and how their lives are intertwined. The movie also touches the issue of relationship – and how true friendship almost transcends marriage. Ferzan also returns to the theme of lost love – the similar thread of his yearning to return to idyllic time that he shared in Facing Window.
Whilst I really enjoyed the movie, it seemed very disjointed at the beginning – the movie throws a lot of characters from the word go, and it’s the viewers task to learn everybody’s name within the first ten minutes of the movie. Whilst I could certainly feel the emotion and the feelings that are portrayed in the movie, I feel that the director could’ve brought it one step further – to carry the scenes through.
It’s not Ferzan’s best – I really love his Facing Window and for this movie I’d probably give it a 3.5/5.
Well, it’s time for me to head off to bed – another movie’s waiting tomorrow!
