After watching The Leap Years for the second time – this time with Yani – I was reminded of the songs in the movie. Whilst I still think that the background music is very sacchariney, I think that the songs in the movie are gorgeous: mellow and smooth, just perfect to warm the evenings. The singer is a Singaporean, Corrinne May, who is based in Los Angeles. Corrinne is not the person behind the background music though – the producers cleverly use her songs in the movie. At first I thought that they are just really beautifully crafted love songs, but upon closer inspections, they are actually quite spiritual. Scars (Stronger for Life) is featured in the movie – have a listen and read the lyric, you will know what I mean.

Scars (Stronger for Life)

I just want to run
Just want to hide away
Close my eyes to your gaze
Just want to leave
Don’t want to hear them say
“You’re no good at this”

When the world swirls with naysayers
Broken wings and torn pages
The road ahead
Swimming in my tears

Break me open
Tear me down into pieces
Broken crumbs on the ground
You can mould and shape me
In your image
Breathe your life
You know I need it
Scars make us stronger for life

Losing myself
Gaining it back again
Forging strength from weakness
All that I am
All that I’m meant to be
Just melting in your hand

Let the world swirl with naysayers
Pickled hearts and sour faces
What is real is what I cannot see

Cut away
All within me
That won’t bear fruit
Cut away
All within me

Fishing her songs in Youtube, I came across a lot of other gems, waiting to be discovered. Here’s another one, titled Everything in Its Time – this song is not featured in the movie, but has deep meaningful wisdom.

Everything in Its Time

Sometimes I wonder what lies ahead
How long till my hunger is fed
They say it’s hard to make it in this part of town
So many people on this merry-go-round

Some folks try astrology
Some turn to crystal balls
To find an answer to get through it all
I just fall on my knees and I try to pray
In the silence I can hear Him say

The river runs and the river hides
Out to the ocean and under the sky
I promise you, the answer will come
Hold on to patience and watch for the sign
Everything in its time

I often feel like that I’m two steps behind
Somebody must have moved that finish line
There are a thousand reasons
Why I should give up
But I’m stubborn in the things I believe

The river runs and the river hides
Out to the ocean and under the sky
I promise you, the answer will come
Hold on to the patience and watch for the sign

‘Cause maybe there’s another plan
One I still cant see
A little surprise, like your love in your life
Funny how time changes how we see

The river runs and the river hides
Out to the ocean and under the sky
I promise you, the answer will come
Hold on to the patience and watch for the sign
Everything in its time
Everything in its time

Beautiful, aren’t they? So if you don’t know Corrinne’s music, perhaps it’s time for you to have a listen to it. 🙂
